How to stop a pandemic?

When it comes to a pandemic, as often said, the numbers of cases, hospitalisations and deaths act like communicating vessels with the regulations that are enforced by the population. Initially, humanity had all the energy to work together to limit the spread of the virus, but now that a year has passed, psychological factors start to supersede the unconditional fighting against it.

Not a single person will enjoy voluntarily limiting themselves for no reason. So, how do we achieve the best ‘slow of the curve’ while minimalising discomfort?
